Abstract

ABSTRACT
Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a growing global health issue, affecting over 850 million people worldwide. CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis frequently experience dermatological complications, such as xerosis and uremic pruritus, caused by metabolic disorders and decreased skin gland function. Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO), rich in lauric acid and vitamin E, is recognized as an effective complementary therapy to maintain skin moisture; however, many patients remain unaware of its benefits and proper application.
Objective: To determine the knowledge level of CKD patients before and after receiving health education regarding the use of VCO for skin health during hemodialysis therapy.
Methods: This study employed a case study design involving one respondent with stage 5 CKD undergoing hemodialysis at Dr. Bratanata Hospital Jambi. The research was conducted across three sessions, including: a pre-test utilizing a 10-item questionnaire, the delivery of health education through lectures and direct demonstrations supported by educational leaflets, and a post-test to evaluate changes in the respondent’s knowledge level.
Results: Prior to the health education session, the respondent demonstrated a low level of knowledge, answering only 2 out of 10 questions correctly, yielding a score of 20% (poor category). Following the health education intervention, a significant improvement was observed, with the respondent correctly answering 9 out of 10 questions, achieving a score of 90% (good category).
Conclusion: Health education on the use of VCO for skin health using a nursing care approach is effective in improving respondent knowledge from the poor to good category. This intervention can be recommended as a complementary care strategy for CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis in healthcare facilities.
